Space Derby Notes – By Steve Spaziani

  • Kits distributed with construction tips
  • Construction guidelines distributed with rules and kits
  • Lighter is faster
  • 2 rubber bands, keep the others as spares
  • Bring spares to race & turn them in at the beginning
  • No knotting of the bands inside the ship
  • Make sure a small notch is cut in the tail to prevent the anchor from spinning
  • Do not glue the anchor in the end
  • Graphite on propeller is ok (encouraged, actually)
  • Lubricating rubber bands is ok (optional)
  • Mixed reviews on this one – liquids said to be better
    • Spray on Teflon vs. graphite / moly
  • Sand the inside of the ships before gluing them together
  • Cut end of holder so it doesn’t protrude too far into the interior
  • Sand the end after cutting it so no sharp edges to cut bands
  • Glue in the holder securely
  • Remove all the mold burrs from the plastic components
  • Be sure the propeller assembly is built properly
