There are several summer camping experiences available locally for Cub Scout-aged boys, some during the day and some overnight, some with parents and some without, and including some family camping weekends.
- Cub World Resident Camp is an overnight camping program with our Pack from July 11-15th. It is held at Camp Carpenter in Manchester NH.
- Cub World Provisional Camping is an overnight camping program for Scouts attending on their own (not with the Pack), for example if you desire a different week (sessions available June 27th through August 12th). It is held at Camp Carpenter in Manchester NH.
- Cub World Day Camp is a daytime-only (8AM-5PM) camping program. Sessions are available from July 12th to August 6th. It is held at Camp Carpenter in Manchester NH.
- Cub World Akela Camp is a shorter overnight program (three days, two nights) for a Scout attending along with a parent or guardian. Sessions are available from June 27th to August 10th. It is held at Camp Carpenter in Manchester NH.
- Day Camps Around the State is a daytime-only (9AM-4PM) camping program available at several smaller camps around NH. Our Pack attends at Camp Doucette in Nashua NH from June 28th to July 2nd, but other opportunities are available to you:
Portsmouth Day Camp at the Seacoast Family YMCA, July 12th - 16th
Rochester Day Camp at the Rochester Fairgrounds, July 12th - 16th
Waterville Valley Day Camp at Waterville Valley Village, July 19th - 23rd
Lebanon Day Camp at the Lebanon LDS Church, July 19th - 23rd
Keene Day Camp at Other Brook Recreation Area, July 26th - 30th
- Spring Family Camping Weekend is an opportunity for a Scout to camp with any family members that would like to come (parents, guardians, siblings). You can visit for the day Saturday or stay overnight into Sunday. It is May 29th-30th at Camp Carpenter.
- Finally, our Pack will be hosting a Family Camping Weekend of our own sometime this summer - stay tuned for details.
Camp truly is the highlight of the cubscouting experience for many boys. Either Day Camp, Overnight Camp, or Akela Camping, the boys learn alot and have a great time. It's up to you what type of camp to send your son to, but we strongly recommend attending at least one of the camps.
Not sure if your son can participate? Effective June 1st, boys are considered to be in the grade that they will enter in the upcoming year. So, boys that will be in 1st Grade in September 2010 are eligible to join Cub Scouts as Tiger Cubs after June 1st, and to attend Day Camp this summer with an adult partner. Boys that will be in Grades 2-5 in September 2010 are eligible for both Day Camp and Resident Camp.
Also, while the prices for some camping options may seem daunting at first, there are some opportunities for help with this. You can get a discount for volunteering at the camp or attending as a leader with our Pack, you can save by registering early, our Pack may be able to help cover part of the cost, Scout Account money can be used (which Scouts earn from fundraising during the year), and in May, Scouts can get pledges for Camp at the District Hike-A-Thon. Finally, Daniel Webster Council offers Camperships to cover significant portions of the camp cost to Scouts that can demonstrate financial hardship and that they have at least tried to do some fundraising. Money really should be the last thing preventing your son from experiencing camp, and we're happy to help solve this challenge. Never assume that it is out of your reach. Please contact us if you have any questions about eligibilty or cost.
For further details on Camping please go to the Daniel Webster Council Camping Web Site or contact us.
If you are sending your son with the Pack to Camp Carpenter please notify Becky Garbos as soon as possible. If you are sending your son to Day Camp or Akela Camp please register online (again, at the Daniel Webster Council Camping Web Site) - but please still let us know which camps you're attending. Remember the sooner you register, the cheaper it is!
Happy Camping,
